Abstract

Classroom action research is a study designed to help teachers know what is going on in class, and use that information to make wise decision in the future. Statistics is one of compulsory subjects that must be followed by students in Accounting Computerized department. The statistics course given to students because it is very useful in everyday life. From 20 students in the class, 65% of students number who got score below 70 at mid exam. It is because students lack an understanding of the hierarchy of arithmetic operations so that the student can not be said to succeed. In other words, it is not still achieving optimal result. So that problems do not occur continuously then the teacher needs to think necessary steps to overcome them. The purpose of action is given to students is to provide a hierarchical understanding of arithmetic operations into statistical problems using the direct instruction model and provide an evaluation in the form of quizzes. After direct instruction model was applied, the average value of the quiz in understanding about hierarchy of the calculation operation at first cycle was 65% and at second cycle, the average value of the quiz was 75% of students number who got score greater than or equals 70. The percentage figures showed that research at second cycle succeed. It means the understanding about the hierarchy of arithmetic operations on the students has increased. This is in conformity with the minimum indicators of success. So, it can be said that the research was successful in increasing understanding about the hierarchy of arithmetic operations to student by applying the direct instruction model.
